GPS use indoors, what's next?
« on: December 13, 2011, 03:24:23 PM »

Each time I visit any of Dubai's big malls, I wish I could use my GPS to navigate easily indoors, finally my wishes about to become true, thanks to "AGPS" and "WIFI LBS"

For decades, GPS use was limmited for outdoors use only, because the GPS satellite signal blocked by concrete and metal surfaces, recent researches and developments, yielded new products which facilitate GPS indoors use, such as GPS repeaters, Assisted GPS and finally WIFI location based services.

The first accurate indoor location tracking announced on 29th Nov. 2011 by a Scottish firm "Sensewhere" and Google Maps has already pushed out updates to Android handsets.

Sensewhere chief exec Rob Palfreyman said: “This is the first time in the world anyone has produced this kind of automatically self-improving location network, requiring no input from the user. This represents the next stage in the evolution of location”

What do you reckon? Will you use this technology? Comment below...

I might make use of this, depending on the cost of course, it is was reasonable and updated regularly, it could save a lot of time if one is in a hurry to locate a shop in a large mall for a quick urchase, but not if one was simply browsing teh shops and strolling through  the mall/s..   :)

I think its free, you need to use android phone, and a GPRS enables SIM card, according to google, its in beta stage and available for selected airports and shopping malls:
"Indoor maps (beta) are now available for select airports, shopping malls, and more. Learn more at g.co/indoormaps "

I didn't use it yet because I don't have android phone, I've to wait after Christmas if no one gifted to me, I'll purchase it myself!!.

cheers
